Charles C. Quarles

Charles Clifford Quarles, of Hockessin, died November 28, 2017.

A proud man of faith, Charlie was born in the winter of 1926 in Charlottesville, VA. Charlie was the youngest of six children born to Charles H. and Carolyn Payne Quarles.

After excelling in public school, Charlie entered the University of Virginia July 2.1943. He entered the military during WWII, and served as an electronic technician’s mate and instructor in the Navy and Navy Reserves from 1944-1946. Following his military service, Charlie graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering at the same school in the spring of 1949. He was a proud member of Omicron Delta Kappa, The Society of Sigma Xi, Theta Tau, and Poe’s Raven Society. Charlie followed his noteworthy education with 37 years of dedicated service with E. I. Du Pont in a wide variety of responsibilities throughout the United States and Europe. Over the course of his career Charlie obtained 5 patents in the chemical processing field, as well as leaving his mark on the newly formed National Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.). He retired in 1986.

A member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Licensed Professional Engineer, Charlie also served on countless professional, spiritual and community Boards over the years. In 1986, Charlie founded Quarles Engineering Consultants, Incorporated. He also dedicated countless hours as an ombudsman for the staff ACMC- World Mission Conferences in support of his strong personal faith. In his later years, Charlie became an iconic image as a volunteer on the Hagley Museum Library brochures.

A proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 21 years Ethel F. Koeppler, their daughter Rebecca Susan as well as his second wife of 27 years Eleanor Stoutt-Brown and her son Robert Brown. Surviving family includes Mark J. Quarles (Beth) Paoli, PA, Barbara K. Quarles-Milton (Joe) Indianapolis, IN, JoAnn P. Gardner (Rick) Ann Arbor, MI, Catherine Brown-Sloan (Bob) Greenwich ,RI, John Brown (Jane)Atlanta, GA, 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and dearest friend Tray Good, Hockessin, DE.

A Memorial Service will be held at Cokesbury Village at 2 P.M. Saturday, December 2, 2017.

Donations may be made in his honor to the Virginia Engineering Foundation, Thornton Hall- University of Virginia- Charlottesville, VA 22903.
