Sharon McCain

Sharon McCain (nee McKinstry), 80, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 13, 2017.

Sharon was born in Iowa, to Jay McKinstry and Elfreida McHaffie. After obtaining a degree in Business Administration at Iowa State University, she moved to Delaware, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Sharon obtained a Master's degree in Child Development from the University of Delaware and embarked on a career dedicated to helping others.

Sharon served her community as the director of several children's day care centers in Wilmington before shifting her focus to the elderly as a unit supervisor at the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Disabilities. After retiring, Sharon continued her service by volunteering with the NEW START Adult Learning Program and the Hope Lutheran Church Food Pantry, funded by Lutheran Community Services.

Sharon was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening, tinkering around her house, reading, shopping, and spending time with her daughters Julie McLagan and Lisa Phifer (wife Judy Gertz), her grandchildren Courtney and Wynter McCain, and her many great-grandchildren. Throughout her life, Sharon was also devoted to several Cairn Terriers named Rufus.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 36 years, Sterling McCain.

In addition to her daughters and (great) grandchildren, Sharon is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Sheila and Myron Thorberg, her late husband's children Shawn, Hope, Marc, Daye, and Tomora, her cousins, nieces, nephews, and many other members of her extended family.

Family and friends are invited to Sharon's memorial service to be held at 1pm on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark, DE, officiated by Reverend Dr. John Rickert. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sharon's memory may be made to the Hope Lutheran Food Pantry through Lutheran Community Services (LCS), 2809 Baynard Blvd, Wilmington, DE 19802, http://www.lcsde.org.
