Barbara M. Winder, 79, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2020. She was born in 1941 in Wilmington, Delaware.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 2007, and by her son, William Mace, in 2018. She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Raposa, Jodi Mace, Bonnie Mace, Barbara Moralez and her sons John Mace Jr. and Mark Mace. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was often referred to as “The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.”
As you can imagine, a mother of seven (perfect) children, Barbara was a homemaker. Although she graduated Brown’s Vocational School in Culinary Arts, she didn’t like to cook. But she loved to bake (best fudge ever) and none of us starved so….. once the youngest went off to school she went to work as a cleaning lady. Wonder where she got all the previous experience? She taught us that even though there wasn’t a lot of money, there was always enough to buy a present for someone. Even though there wasn’t a lot of food, there was enough to share with others in need. She often took 7 children and a few strays to Lums Pond, ice skating at Twin Lakes, or a day trip to Rehoboth Beach in the family car, the El Camino. She had a talent for writing and often sent hand-written letters that could make you laugh or cry with the flick of the pen. Barbara loved her children, her sisters, smoking and Delaware Park and not necessarily in that order. She recently said her, “greatest wish was for her children to be happy!”
Barbara’s love, sarcasm and orneriness will be missed dearly by her family, her sister Dorothy, her daughter-in-law Diana, niece Leona, and her best friend Dolly. She is now reunited with her husband, son and many others that she never forgot.
A visitation will be held on January 14, 2021 at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE 19702, from 12:30 – 1:30. Committal services will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Please note current COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines will be observed.
