Caroline Margaret Golt died on July 18, 2026, in Newark, Delaware, at the age of 78.
Born in 1947, Caroline was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Baker Golt. She was a graduate of Christiana High School, Class of 1965, and the University of Delaware, Class of 1969. She went on to build a 45-year career with the University of Delaware Agricultural Sciences Department as a Microbiology Research Assistant, a role that reflected her lasting interest in scientific study and in helping others understand the physical aspects of the world.
Caroline’s life was also shaped by her many interests beyond her professional work. She was deeply involved with horticulture through the University of Delaware Botanical Gardens and Art in the Garden. She was a professional photographer and active with the Newark Camera Club. She also participated in the Newark Arts Alliance. Her commitment to learning remained central throughout her life, and she especially valued scientific concepts and opportunities to share that knowledge with others.
One aspect that shaped Caroline’s life is that her mother suffered a series of heart attacks and strokes when Caroline was just ten years old. Caroline took on the responsibility of meal preparation, clothes washing and house cleaning for several years. Later, when her mother was in a nursing home for ten years Caroline visited daily to ensure her mother was getting proper care. Caroline also developed a flower garden plot in the facility’s courtyard for the residents to participate in and enjoy.
A woman of steady purpose and wide-ranging in interests, Caroline Margaret Golt devoted her life to science, education, and the pursuits that brought meaning to her days. Her memory remains with those who knew her and with the institutions and communities to which she gave her time and attention.
She attended Bible Presbyterian Church, now Evangelical Presbyterian Church with her family.
Caroline is remembered by her brother, Charles, and his wife, Lois; her nephews, Michael and Peter; Michael’s wife, Morgan; and their children, Levi and Adelyn.
A memorial service is being planned for later in the Fall.
