Charles Joseph Fedorkowicz, age 76, was born in Wilmington on March 13, 1949. After graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1967, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he became a Petty Officer and Machinist’s Mate and served on the U.S.S. Guadalupe.
After leaving the Navy, he attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 1979 with a B.A. Degree in English. He then joined the Peace Corps and taught carpentry in Ivory Coast, West Africa. After returning home, he worked in construction until he became a postman in 1985.
Charles suffered a stoke in 2007. He lived at Regal Heights Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Hockessin until January 16, when he suffered another stroke and died.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Edith (Dempsey) Fedorkowicz. He is survived by many cousins and by his sisters, Patricia Jean Fedorkowicz and Mary Michele Cleary. In his avuncular role, he is fondly remembered by nephews Christopher Cleary, Oliver Cleary (Sarah), and Matthew Cleary (Tara), as well as by nieces Amelia Cleary and Molly Merrill (Donny). He was an adored uncle. Molly says. “He really was extraordinary!”
Viewing will be held at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway in Newark, on Thursday, January 29. Viewing will be from 10-11 am, and a service from 11-12 noon. Interment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will take place in February at a private ceremony.
