Dorothy Marie (Roten) Payne

Dorothy Marie Roten Payne, 93, of Newark, DE, went to be with her Lord on September 17, 2023.  She was born in 1930 on Pond Mountain, Creston, North Carolina to the late Earl Marvin Roten and Mertie Patrick Roten.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Frederick Glynn Payne, sisters, Ruby Lou Roten Smith, and Margaret Louise Roten Wachenheimer.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Marvin Payne (Linda) of Middletown, DE, her daughter, Cathy Cranfield (Robert) of Rehoboth Beach, DE and include her brother, Fred Roten (Georgie) of Johnson City, TN.  Grandchildren include Kimberly Payne Coleman (John), Karen Payne Boyer (Rick), Steven Payne (Ana) and Christopher Cranfield.  She also has 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was raised on a rural mountain in the highlands of western North Carolina before moving to Mountain City, TN at the age of 17.   She had several careers including banking, cosmetology, and real estate sales. 

Dorothy enjoyed reading and writing poems and stories.  She was a faithful Christian and was an active member of EverSpring Church in St. Georges, DE. 

Her visitation will be held from 9:00 – 9:45 am on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, followed by a Funeral Service at 9:45 am at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE.  A Celebratory Service will follow at 11:00 pm at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
