Elizabeth (Brown) Menton

Elizabeth Ann Menton, age 75, of Newark, Delaware, passed away on Friday, April 17,  2026 peacefully at home surrounded by family. Elizabeth was born in Wilmington, DE, in 1950, but spent the first few years of her life in Chadds Ford, PA, about which she always spoke fondly. Elizabeth, or Betty as most knew her, graduated from Christiana High School in 1968 and enjoyed participating in spelling bees. Not long after high school, she was married to Timothy Menton. His time in the US Army led them to Germany for two years. There, she very much enjoyed traveling through Europe to places such as Spain, Holland, Austria and France, and finally ended up in San Francisco. She cherished this period of time.

Her affinity for making a comfortable and welcoming home for the family was highlighted by a natural ability to cook delicious meals, including spaghetti with meat sauce, lasagna, enchiladas, and the famous “Jeans Beans.” In fact, there was nothing Betty couldn’t cook or bake, all from scratch, and she was fearless in trying new recipes, which always yielded astounding success.  Her pies, brownies and applesauce cake were second to none, and she often rounded out meals with her heavenly chocolate cake as an exclamation point on the evening’s festivities. She loved cooking pancakes for all her grandchildren, and they loved devouring them.

Betty loved spending time with her grandchildren and entertaining. On any day, at any time or for any holiday, she could find a completely justifiable reason for everyone to gather for a celebration. Her other passions included listening to music, especially The Beatles; doing the crossword puzzles in the newspaper; playing Scrabble and Spades; watching comedies and soaps; and walking at Lum’s Pond. Each and every summer since childhood, she loved going to the Poconos - Promised Land State Park in particular. Early in life, she spent time as a very good artist, creating still-life paintings and fashion drawings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Anna Brown. She is survived by her husband, Timothy Menton of Newark; her three children, Timothy T Menton (Jaime) of Perryville, MD, Jennifer Slowik of Middletown, Katherine Wagner (Eric) of Townsend; her five grandchildren, Kellen and Charlie (Steve Slowik, father), Anna, Abby and Eric; her siblings, James Brown (Shelly) of North East, MD, Bill Brown (Kathy) of Pike Creek, and Ruth Kowalski (Bob) of New Castle; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026 from 10-11:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE 19702. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE at a later date.
