George H. Woodham, age 83, of Newark, DE, adored father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2024, after a courageous battle with Vascular Dementia.
George was born in Brunswick, GA and was the youngest child of Roy and Robbie Woodham. As a young man he excelled at athletics playing for both the baseball and football teams at Glynn Academy. He attended Morehead State University on a football scholarship where he spotted the love of his life in the town parade. Later in life George was passionate about coaching his sons and others in baseball and football. When not coaching, you could find him on a baseball diamond umpiring at various competitive levels. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed summers on his boats navigating the Delaware Bay or coastal Georgia islands fishing with his father and sons. He spent his career in the gypsum industry working for Georgia Pacific and Lafarge. George was a loving husband and dedicated father. The children he raised and the people they became are his proudest achievement. Known as Pop, he also enjoyed his five grandchildren and was their biggest sports and theater fan. Rarely missing a game, he was known to offer coaching tips along the way.
George was predeceased by his wife Carol Woodham and is survived by children Robin Woodham, Alan Woodham (Diane), Roy Woodham (Nicole), five grandchildren Paige (Steve), Sean, Ryan, Tyler and Kyle. He was filled with joy as he welcomed his great grandchild Bryson in late 2023. George was predeceased by sisters Barbara Jean McManious and Dorothy G. Woodham.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 from 10-11:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE 19702. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home.
