Jonathan David Smith

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jonathan David Smith, age 47, of Newark, Delaware. Jonathan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 10,2023 after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. 

Jon grew up in New Castle, Delaware and attended William Penn High School. He started in the pool industry at age 16, working for several pool companies, the latest of which was Swift Pools. As a pool technician, Jon was that guy that could fix anything related to a pool (or anything else for that matter). He took great pride in his work and enjoyed interacting with customers.

Jon loved anything to do with cars and motorcycles. This led him to also work a part-time job at Cycle Gear, where he was able to talk motorcycles all day long. Jon loved to tell a story and anyone that met him knew him as that fun loving guy who could talk to anyone. One of Jon’s most loved things was his family.  He especially loved doing things and going places with his wife such as antiquing, taking long drives, and visiting car shows. He really enjoyed taking long motorcycle rides with his brother and playing with his grandkids. Being a big kid himself, Jon was a big hit with his grandkids and was always spending time goofing around with them. His fun-loving spirit and kind heart will dearly be missed by all that have known him.

Jon is survived by his wife Shirley Smith, two daughters Rebecca Salmon and Kristen Alexander (Corey Crispin), three grandchildren Dahlia Martin, Kameron Alexander, and Deegan Alexander, his mother Susan Bensing, two brothers Steven Smith (Corinne) and Robert Smith, sister Jennifer Cahill.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 9-10:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE 19702. A celebration of his life will follow at 10:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home. Interment will be private at Gracelawn Cemetery.
