Kenneth Ray Vanieken, age 90, of Newark, DE passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021 peacefully at his home.
He was an active member of the Wilmington Church of the Brethren for over 50 years. During his time at the church he filled many roles with WCOB including Sunday School teacher and superintendent, a member of the choir for more than 50 years and served as a church Deacon for many years.
Ken was a retired Acting Sergeant from the U.S. Army. He served in Guam where he made parts for trucks, tanks and airplanes, also made a set of pistons for a 12 cylinder LaFrance engine. He retired after 30 years of service for the City of Wilmington, also worked for ICI Americas (AstraZeneca) for 18 years upon retiring.
He was a season ticket holder for many years and then became an usher for the Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball team where enjoyed interacting with the fans and was able to watch baseball which was one of his favorite pastimes.
Ken was predeceased Dorothy, his wife of 65 years and is survived by his four daughters Mary Ann Bullock (Scott) of Newark, DE, Naomi Piatek (Tom) of Harleysville, PA, Phyllis Vanieken-Ryals (Jim) of Houston, DE, and Yvonne Morgan (Jack) of New Castle, DE, along with six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11 am at the Wilmington Church of the Brethren, 27 Belmont Ave., Wilmington, DE 19804, with visitation beginning at 10 am. Face masks are required.
