Lidia Gharibians Sohodski, 94 years, passed away on August 8, 2022.
Mrs. Sohodski received her early education in Marseille, France where her parents Simon and Yekaterina Gharibian fled from Stalin’s regime of the Soviet Union. She married her late husband, Alexander R. Sohodski, after a seven-year engagement and in 1953 came to live with him in Wilmington, Delaware. Lidia’s parents joined the family in Wilmington in 1957.
Mrs. Sohodski continued her education at the University of Delaware. With her parents at home, their help and care of the grandchildren facilitated Lidia’s attending school. The Master’s degree and candidate’s degrees were attained later while teaching.
Upon graduation from the University, Mrs. Sohodski began her teaching career at Mount Pleasant Senior High School where for the next 30 years she was teaching French, Russian, and headed the Foreign Languages Department.
Besides teaching, studying at the University of Delaware for advanced degree, raising three children, and taking care of her aging parents, Lidia managed to travel and supervise student trips to Europe and Russia while it was still the Soviet Union.
Since her retirement in 1993, Mrs. Sohodski volunteered in an elementary school, preschool, and with emigrant adults studying English and Citizenship at B’nai B’rith.
Mrs. Sohodski is survived by her three children, Marie Roesler (Paul) of Sarasota, FL, Richard Sohodski (Eileen) of Hockessin, DE and Elizabeth Curry (Lee) of Woodstock, GA; grandchildren Nolan Roesler, Adrienne Roesler, Christopher Curry, Evan Sohodski and Caroline Sohodski; and two great-grandchildren.
Services for Lidia and her husband, Alexander, will be private. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, DE.
