Mary Alice (Carter) Flickinger, 84 years of age, passed away peacefully in the care of Seasons Hospice at home with her family on Tuesday September 21, 2021.
Mary was born in 1937 in Wampee, (Horry County) South Carolina to the late Leonard C. and Susan M. (Lockamy) Carter. She was the third of six children, three of who predecease her: Charles L. Carter, Christine Downer and Thomas J. Carter. Mary was educated in the city of Shallotte, NC and graduated in 1955 from Shallotte High School.
Mary married Jack N. Flickinger in 1957 and two daughters were born from this union. They moved to Newark, Delaware and resided there until 2012. After Jack’s sudden passing, she moved to Clayton, Delaware to live with her daughter and son-in-law where she lived until her death.
Mary was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in school then she worked in retail for many years. She then changed from retail to a management position for ABM building services where she retired in 2011.
Mary loved spending time with her family and catching up with her friends when she was able. She liked to do word searches, play solitaire, and read her social media messages. She also loved fishing and spending quality time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her sisters Nell Walker of Wilmington, NC and Shirley Jordan of Drexel, NC, two daughters Kimberly Ann (Bobby W.) Hamm of Clayton, DE and Jacqueline (Kenneth C.) Irwin of Newark, DE, four grandchildren Lisa N. Irwin, Samuel J. Flickinger, Laura C. Irwin, and Bobby G. (Julia) Dvorak, six great grandchildren Keanu M. Jenkins, Bobby A. Dvorak, Allyson M. Flickinger, William G. Dvorak, Bryce T. Dvorak, and Brody P. Dvorak and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends and family can visit Friday October 1, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Hwy, Newark, DE 19702 with a memorial service beginning at 11:00 am. A committal service will be held at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday October 5, 2021 at 10:00 am.
