Michael Thornton, 65, of Newark, Delaware, passed away surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 20, 1960, in Chester, Pennsylvania, Mike was a man whose presence filled every room with laughter, strength, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
What can you really say about Mike, Dad, Pop, the man who could fix anything, carry more than anyone thought possible, and still have you laughing before you even realized what just happened.
Mike was the beloved husband of Sharon Thornton, his partner in life, love, and by all accounts the only person who could out-stubborn him. Friends and family often joked that Mike might have been strong as a mule, but Sharon held the reins. If Mike had the final word, it was usually because Sharon allowed it and even then, everyone knew who was really in charge.
He was a proud and devoted father to Elizabeth and her husband Michael, Brendan and his wife Laura, and Mikayla, who preceded him in death. Mike carried Mikayla’s memory with him every day, holding her close in his heart and honoring her through the love he gave to his family.
He is also survived by his loving sisters, Kathleen and Joanne, who shared in a lifetime of memories, laughter, and the unbreakable bond of family.
Mike was a cherished grandfather to Finnley, Capri, Lena, and Lily, who brought him immense pride and joy. He loved watching them grow and took every opportunity to make them laugh, just as he had done his entire life.
A master carpenter by trade, Mike’s hands built more than just structures, he built a life for his family rooted in hard work, resilience, and dedication. There was nothing he couldn’t fix, no problem he wouldn’t tackle, and no challenge he would walk away from. He provided for his family until his very last breath, embodying what it truly means to be dependable.
Mike will always be remembered for his quick wit, infectious humor, and the way he could make anyone laugh, no matter the situation. He was the kind of man you could count on without hesitation, the one who showed up, stood strong, and never backed down. He was tough, hardworking, and yes, stubborn but that same stubbornness was what made him fiercely loyal and deeply committed to the people he loved.
Above all else, Mike was his family’s everything, their protector, their provider, their comedian, and their constant.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength that will continue to live on through his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
And if Mike were here to have the last word, he’d probably leave us with:
“Ding Dong Done.”
