Retha Mae Brierley

Retha Mae Brierley, age 89, of Bear, DE and formerly of Pembroke, NC, passed away on July 23, 2024 in Bear.

Retha attended school in the Pembroke public school system in Pembroke North Carolina. She worked at Au Clair Group Home as an advisor and cook for many years before her retirement in 2000.

She loved nature and was an avid gardener at home and was at her happiest planting and growing any seed or tree she could. She was also proud of her heritage as a member of the Lumbee Indians tribe.

Retha is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John H. Brierly, Sr. in 2015 and her 8 siblings.

She is survived by her daughters: Linda Brierley and Joyce VanBlarcom (El); sons: John H Brierley, Jr., James H Ferrell (Shelley); grandchildren: Kristy VanBlarcom, Lisa VanBlarcom, Jesse VanBlarcom, Crystal Tweed, Faren Brierley, Thomas Freeman, John H. Brierley III, Hannah Brierley, Connie Mahoney (Brendon), James Ferrell III, Lola Ferrell, Daniel Kelley; and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving companion Fred Wise, Sr.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August, 2, 2024 from 10-11:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE 19702. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at Beeson Funeral Home. Interment will be private at Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
