Shawn A. Mitchell

Shawn A. Mitchell, age 46, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at his home in Newark, Delaware. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the son of Claude K. Mitchell Sr. and the late Barbara C. Mitchell.

Shawn was a graduate of Howard High School of Technology.  He worked most recently at LabCorp in New Castle and A.C. Moore on Kirkwood Highway although you could often find him pitching in at Switch Skateboarding in Newark.

Shawn was baptized at Newark United Methodist Church; as a teen he was confirmed in that same church but found God in many places, most recently at True Life Church in Newark, Delaware. He was a Cub Scout in a local Pack and went all the way to Life Scout as a Boy Scout. Though some might think it odd, for it would be hard to find a gentler soul, Shawn loved to learn fighting techniques and attained high belts in both Taekwondo and Kung Fu.

Shawn will be best remembered for his love of the arts, especially music and drawing. You are a rare individual if you knew Shawn or worked with him and don’t own a piece of original hand drawn art by him because he shared his talent with so many. Shawn was the lead singer for several bands and loved nothing better than playing his acoustic guitar.

Shawn is survived by his son Morgan Mitchell, by his father Claude K Mitchell Sr., brothers Claude Jr., Michael, and Martin, four nephews Ryan, Christopher, Benjamin, and Claude 3, a beloved aunt Elizabeth (Ward) Gellens, an uncle Frank Mitchell, sister-in-law Jacqualynn, cousins Joe and Brandon to whom he was especially close and many additional cousins and second cousins.  He also leaves dear friends like Will “Sketch” Harris whom he met at a Boys Club Summer Camp and the two remained lifelong friends despite great distances that separated them at times.

Besides his mother, Shawn is predeceased by his brother and best friend Dan Mitchell, grandparents: Felix and Helena Mitchell and Salvatore Rampolla and Carol Ward, his uncles: John Mitchell, Steve Osbourne and Tony Ward, aunts: Bertie Carrow, Kay Parsons, Ann Pedrick, and his cousins Allen Gellens and Stephanie Osbourne.

Funeral services will be held at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE at 11:00 am on Thursday November 16, 2023 where visitation will begin at 10:00 am.  Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
