Thomas C. Oathout

Tom passed away peacefully on June 1st surrounded by his family at the age of 80. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey and raised in Cranford, New Jersey, he experienced countless moments, both on and off the ice, that helped shape the man so many came to know and love.  A graduate of the University of Miami of Ohio with a degree in English, he carried his passions for hockey, writing, and photography throughout his life.

He served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army as a Special Agent in Military Intelligence assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade.  He is quoted over one of the portals on the Vietnam Memorial in New York City “I am a soldier, when soldiers aren’t in fashion.” Tom remained a proud American throughout his life.

An accomplished author and award-winning photographer, his achievements reflected his creativity, dedication, and unique perspective on the world.  Yet, as meaningful as those accomplishments were, they never surpassed the pride and joy he found in his family and friends.

Tom was a loving husband and father, a cherished brother, and a great friend.  The memories created, the stories told, and the love shared will continue to live on in all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughters, Alex and Courtney, brother, Jim, and sister, Nancy Rury.

Family and friends are invited on Friday, June 26th to honor Tom at 1pm at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.  In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Tunnel to Towers, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Shriners Children, or Faithful Friends Animal Society.
