William James Saxton age 92 of Bear, Delaware, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on August 9, 2021. A native Delawarean, Bill was born in Wilmington in 1929 and was the son of Earl C. Saxton and Ethel (Greenwalt) Saxton. He was a member of the Cement Mason’s Local #36 for over 50 years. He also served in the Navy.
Bill was an Assistant Scout Master for several years at Sacred Heart Church, Wilmington. He served as an usher at 7:30 am Mass on Sundays at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. He was a long time parishioner and volunteered for many projects. Bill donated his time and masonry skills helping to build Padua Academy in Wilmington. His name is engraved on a plaque in the school.
Bill is survived by his wife Alice (Marshall) Saxton of 71 years, brother Thomas Saxton (Pat) of Wilmington, sister-in-law Joanne Saxton of Wilmington, children: Jeannette Smith (William) of Bear, Janice Matarese (Paul) of Middletown, Ann Snitch (Len) of Madison, Alabama, Joseph Saxton (Marie) of Felton, grandchildren: Christopher Smith (Joanne) of Orlando, Florida, Kim Gonzon (Anthony) of Middletown, Lisa Braun (Eric) of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, Michelle Hall (Larry) of Townsend, Deborah Mikus (John) of Newark, Michael Snitch of Madison, Alabama, Stephanie Saxton (Chris) of Bear, Anthony Saxton (Alicia) of Smyrna, great grandchildren: Matthew, Justin, Ryan, Kayla, TJ, Hailey, Jason, Nathan, Rhyan, Liliana, and Madeleine.
A Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 12:30 on Friday August 13, 2021 at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark. The burial will follow in New St. Paul’s New Catholic Cemetery, Cox Neck Rd. New Castle DE, 19720.
