Welcome to the memorial page for

Patricia M Murphy

January 1, 1928 ~ January 10, 2010 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Patricia M. Murphy, age 82, of Kennett Square, PA, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2010. She was the wife of the late Joseph F. Murphy, who passed away in 1998.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Dorothy Barnard Megargee.

Patsy was very social and cherished the lifelong friendships she formed at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA, and Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Pennsylvania. She met her future husband there and both graduated in 1950.

After thier wedding in Haverford, PA, in 1951, they raised a growing family while moving with the DuPont Company, from Rochester NY, Parlin NJ, Wilmington, DE and overseas in Frankfurt, Germany. This suited her well as she loved to be on the go.

She enjoyed theater, travel, and was a sharp bridge player throughout her life, playing in tournaments at the Greenville Country Club. Later in life, she remained vital and active, volunteering her time and energies at the Blood Bank of Delaware, Delaware Hospice, and the Delaware Art Museum, among others.

Among her numerous friends and family, she was adored as a caring soul with a unique wit and a charming gift for conversation that often cut to the quick. She loved life, her children, and was especially fond of her many grandchildren. She was overjoyed to learn recently that she would become a great-grandmother in June.

Patricia is survived by her children Brian B. Murphy of Wilmington, Barclay J. Murphy and his wife Tina of Landenberg, PA, Sharon Hernandez and her husband Randall of Newark, Dorothy Sempsey of Alexandria, VA, and Lisa Hammond and her husband Ralph of Scottsdale, AZ; nine loving grandchildren; and siblings M. Barnard Megargee of NC, Marjorie Doerr of Philadelphia, Mary Anderson of Philadelphia, and Caroline Chagan of ME.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 15 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 304 Lore Avenue in Wilmington. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Patricia's memory may be made to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
